Cooking Matters (c) Classes! 

These 6-week classes provide nutrition education through hands-on cooking activities.  They are produced by Share Our Strength, and made available by ConAgra, WalMart and local partners of the Umatilla-Morrow Headstart-WIC program, Salvation Army, Commission on Children and Families and the Oregon State Extension office.  Call Umatilla-Morrow Headstart-WIC program 541-966-3354 for more information on Cooking Matters sessions.

Classes are now being organized or implemented in

  • Umatilla County - Hermiston, Milton-Freewater and Pendleton
  • Wheeler County - Condon
  • Morrow County - Boardman; Heppner

What’s Your Connection?" March 15, 2012

Eastern Oregon's 4th annual food and farm connection event, "What's Your Connection?" for growers and buyers took place on Thursday, March 15th in Pendleton, Oregon, to resounding applause and success!

This year’s workshop was a project of CAPECO’s Community Foods Program and Columbia Blue Mountain Resource Conservation & Development, with support from USDA's (FMPP grant); ODA's My Oregon Farmer program, the Port of Umatilla, Umatilla Economic Development Council, and Umatilla Electric Coop. Keynote speaker Ken Meter, the founder and lead consultant from CrossRoads Resource Center, in Minnesota. Noted for landmark studies, including “Finding Food in Farm Country, Mr. Meter has mapped the food and farming opportunities throughout Oregon, and brings us a significant and inspiring message about building health, wealth, connection and capacity in our communities, and food systems.

At the workshop Meter's presentation helped participants "connect the dots" between local farm and food economy and the negative contrast with long-term trends in the agriculture (see Analyses below). Attendees spent the day sharing, identifying activities and possible solutions for expansion and region-specific capacity building. Agenda included a Panel of a local grocer, grower, distributor, chef, rancher, farmer, school nutritionist and cook was exceptionally Break-out Sessions & Round Tables include 'Speed-dating', Season-Extension Technologies, Marketing your Products and regional Food Hub discussions.
